BMW (Bayerische Motoren Werke AG) has been producing cars since 1916. During the last decades have seen immense popularity as a group, with sales in Europe soared from only 699,400 in 1998 to 1,373,970 in 2006, according AutoIntell.

The most popular of all BMW car is without a doubt, the 3 Series range, with the 2005 annual report produced by the company shows that the range of 3 Series cars sold was the whole class .

Divided into five generations, the 3 Series has evolved considerably in its 35 year history, with cars getting bigger and more powerful in every generation.

1. The first generation. The generation that started it all, the first BMW 3 Series took place on May 2, 1975 and production ran for eight years until 1983. Available in a simple 2-door sedan or 2 door convertible, which was labeled as a luxury car entry level. The biggest driver of the first generation was a 2-liter size and was one of only two generations to provide a gearbox 3 speed automatic.

2. Second generation. The popularity of the second series 3 is evident in the fact that this generation was the one that was produced by BMW for the longest, for 12 years from 1982 to 1994.

The second generation engines were divided between the 4 cylinders on the M10, M40 and M42 and 6-cylinder in the M20 and M21, with a mixture of gasoline and diesel fuel in the models.

3. Third generation. The longer second-generation 3 Series produced, the production on this line began in 1991 and not completed until 2000. This generation is considered by many as the most successful of BMW, paving the way for the fourth and fifth generation to take off and be as successful as they were and still are today.

With the exception of the first generation, the 3 Series range were the only available without four-wheel drive option, only available through BMW dealers front engine rear wheel drive.

4. Fourth generation. Entering production in 1998 and lasted until 2005, the fourth generation of BMW 3 Series was particularly successful, each year a spot on the 10 best cars list created by Car and Driver magazine.

13 different types of engines were available when this generation is produced, ranging from a 1.8 liter engine with a 3-liter turbo diesel (the fourth generation is the generation only when engine 1. 6 liters was not offered), many of which came with a 6-speed gearbox.

5. Fifth generation. The last line of the BMW 3 Series cars began production in 2005 and covers a range of different styles from 2 door coupe with a 4-door sedan is not a choice of 12 different engine options.

This fifth-generation 3 Series has remained the popularity that the series has, with the economic news indicating that the sales figures of over 58,000 across all BMW dealerships in the United Kingdom in 2007, the number 3 was one of the ten most popular cars in the country.
